Robin was arrested by the crime branch in January 2016 and came out on bail in May this year. Soon after, he formed a team with the help of gangsters Ravi Gangwar, Rohit Singhal and Rahul Singhal who he had met in Tihar, police said. Gangwar is a notorious criminal operating in south and south-east Delhi and is considered a key man behind the gang wars in the area.
“Inspector Rajpal Dabas’s team received information that the accused would come to a five-star hotel in Paschim Vihar to sell off the stolen BMW. The team laid a trap at strategic locations on the service lane of Outer Ring road. Around 7.10pm, a black BMW bearing registration number CH 01 AW 8950 came from Janakpuri side and was parked at the service lane. Two persons alighted from the car and were asked to surrender,” the DCP added.
The team tried to apprehend them but they started running. Robin was nabbed after a chase. His aide, Mohit Saini, managed to escape. The accused had put a forged registration plate on the car. The original number was UP 16 BE 8301.
Robin was wanted by police in Gurgaon, Hisar, Karnal, Chandigarh and Panchkula. He is partially bald and wore a wig to conceal his identity.
According to Noida sector 20 SHO Amarnath Yadav, the car Robin used to steal the BMW was also stolen. “The Audi A-7 was reported stolen from A-block of sector 26 in Noida on July 5. The owner, Chandra Mohan, is a garment exporter and he was present in his house when the theft occurred,” Yadav said.
“Mohan was asleep while his wife had gone for a morning walk. The accused allegedly walked in around 7.30am and simply walked away with the car keys, and drove off. However, since we did not have any CCTV footage, we could not find the culprits or identify their modus operandi,” Yadav added.
On July 15, the accused stole another high-end car from sector 17A.
