P3 Orion
Bethesda, MD-based Lockheed Martin has delivered a P-3 Orion with new Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) modifications to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
The company said on March 8 that the aircraft is the seventh CBP P-3 it has delivered ahead of or on schedule from its production facility in Greenville, SC, since July 2010.

TSA administrator John Pistole is under increasing pressure from congress, screeners’ unions, airline groups and the public to re-think his agency’s recent announcement that would allow small knives back in commercial aircraft cabins.
A group of bi-partisan members of the House Homeland Security Committee, including committee minority leader Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), Reps. Michael Grimm (R-NY) and Eric Swalwell (D-CA), wrote a letter urging Pistole to refrain from implementing the change.

The Coast Guard welcomed a Maritime Security Response Team detachment home from counter-piracy deployment on March 8.
The Chesapeake, VA-based advanced interdiction team (AIT) from the Coast Guard Maritime Security Response Team (MSRT) returned from a five-month counter-piracy deployment to the Middle East, which included duty in the waters off the coast of Somalia and the Arabian Sea, said the Coast Guard.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, struck down an earlier district court’s ruling in the case of Howard Cotterman on March 8, not excluding searches of electronic gear, but raising the standard for initiating them.

A bill that improves the ability of U.S. infrastructure to respond to a bioterror or pandemic has been approved by both the House and Senate and now awaits the president’s signature to become law.
The bill, Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Reauthorization Act of 2013 (H.R. 307), was passed by the House on March 5, after having been approved in the Senate days before. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and a senior member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, sponsored the legislation and praised its approval.
