‘Cyber War’ Funded by Fear

This week, an international cyber war game, Cyber Storm 3, is being staged by the Homeland Security Department where they will simulate a sophisticated hacker attack. While former intelligence director Mike McConnell has warned numerous times that the US is unprepared for a cyber attack and must overhaul its defenses but critics say cyber warfare is an empty threat. RT Producer Lucy Kafanov explains why it’s hard to see where potential threats could be coming from.

Indirect interference with truthful information getting out. This is done by stealing the impact of the truth, by printing a parallel story with disinformation at the same time, or “leaking” an opposite story with disinformation at the same approximate time. Disinformation leaks can be done through the mass media, or an individual alter.

US: “Both Obama & Bush administrations had rejected requests to make the text of ACTA public”

Canada: “The University of Ottawa’s Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic filed an access to information request but received only a document stating the title of the agreement, with everything else blacked out”

The European Parliament in ’09 passed a resolution requiring the European Commission to disclose details, so Americans can view the text, just not via their own government???

** ACTA :: Anti Counterfeiting Trade Agreement ** This isn’t just another US bill against piracy, it’s an international body that exists outside of existing organisations like WIPO/WTO/UN/etc. It include border searches between member states (Australia, Canada, EU members, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Switzerland and the United States) … why can nobody in the news say ‘ACTA’??

I don’t know that it’s a waste or just a game. The military does mock wars all the time. That is how soldiers are trained and scenarios are played out. It doesn’t seem the purpose of this is to test technological systems but to test the govt agencies ability to work together. That said, I agree with Kafanov about the need to be careful about govt using such exercises as ways to promote the politicians desire for more power. We do need improved internet security, but not at the cost of our rights

Lucy Kafanov is amazing. Rarely do you hear someone so reasonable all the time on most every issue. Brilliant stuff from a beautiful lady.
