A Lithuanian hacker has claimed responsibility for a cyber hack which brought a UK police force website down.
The Greater Manchester Police site crashed last night but officers believed it was a minor technical issue and got it back up-and-running.
But it went down a second time – and then a mystery Twitter user from Lithuania claimed responsibility, the Manchester Evening News reported .
Deputy Chief Constable Ian Hopkins confirmed the attack to the MEN and described it as ‘an act of internet vandalism’.
“We are investigating this and we working with our technical people to get the site up and running again. I would like to reassure people that everything on the website is publicly accessible information. Sensitive data we hold on other systems are not affected by this,” he said.
