The ingenuity of black hat hackers doesn’t fail to impress, if only it was used for good. So what is the latest attempt by said hackers to get into your system? This time around they have created a “Gold Version” of WhatsApp, the popular messaging application, to get users to click on a link.
If you don’t know WhatsApp has not created a Gold Version of its application, you can easily be tricked into clicking the link and downloading a malware.
This is a continuation of a previous attempt by hackers with a similar approach. In that instance it was called WhatsApp Plus, and it made bold claims to entice users so they would install the new version of the app. This included 700 new themes, more emoticons, different fonts, colors and more.
If you were unfortunate enough to download the Plus version, WhatsApp probably banned you from using it.
The company posted the following FAQ to explain its action regarding the ban:
Why am I banned for using WhatsApp Plus and how do I get unbanned?
WhatsApp Plus is an application that was not developed by WhatsApp, nor is it authorized by WhatsApp. The developers of WhatsApp Plus have no relationship to WhatsApp, and we do not support WhatsApp Plus. Please be aware that WhatsApp Plus contains source code which WhatsApp cannot guarantee as safe and that your private information is potentially being passed to 3rd parties without your knowledge or authorization.
It went on to say, uninstall your application and install an authorized version of WhatsApp from our website, Google Play or the App Store.
The Gold Version is pretty much in the same vain. However, the features it promises are different. First it gets your attention by saying it was available to celebrities, and you can only get it through an invitation. And the features it promises include being able to send 100 pictures at one time and video calling.
The good thing about the Internet is news travels fast, but that doesn’t mean everyone is online waiting to hear about the latest hacks, which works greatly to the hackers advantage.
The best way to protect yourself is to never download anything on to your device unless you know for sure it comes from the publisher. You can go a step further by going directly to the site to download the application you need, because the emails and links hackers create these days can look exactly like the official version, fooling even experts if they don’t take the time to make sure.
