Poconos man charged with downloading child porn; claims computer was hacked

A 34-year-old Monroe County man was arrested Wednesday after detectives discovered that he had been downloading child pornography, according to court records.

When Monroe County detectives talked to Gerald Jones, of Coolbaugh Township, as they served a search warrant at his home on Wednesday morning, he tried to explain to them that someone had hacked into his computer and downloaded videos, police said.

However, detectives said he was in the process of downloading more child pornography videos when they served a search warrant, police said.

Jones was charged with 14 counts of possessing child pornography, one count of criminal use of a communication facility, possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was sent to the Monroe County Correctional Facility on $50,000 bail.

Monroe County detectives were conducting an online investigation into the downloading and sharing of child pornography when they discovered a computer using a file-sharing network offering to share video files that contained child pornography.

That computer was then traced back to a home in the A Pocono Country Place developments in Coolbaugh Township. Detectives went to the home at 7:41 a.m. Wednesday and Jones answered the door. Jones told detectives he had just smoked marijuana and then told them he had been hacked, police said.

Detectives said that Jones’ computer was on the file-sharing network when they found it in a spare bedroom.

During the search, detectives found three videos containing child pornography on his computer and 11 more videos on an external hard drive, according to court records. A full forensic examination is underway on the devices, police said, and can take several weeks.

Marijuana and two smoking pipes were also found in the house, police said.
