Numerous calls from a collection agency alerted a Port Hope man to a possible fraud.
The man contacted Port Hope Police on Dec. 9 after receiving phone calls from a legitimate collection agency indicating he had an outstanding invoice of $1,300 with Bell Canada, said Port Hope Police.
The man told police he has never had any Bell Canada products and was unsure why he was being contacted. Police believe the man’s identity may have been stolen.
The culprit used the man’s identity to purchase Bell Canada products. The matter was referred to the Bell Canada fraud department for its assistance in the investigation.
