POLICE are urging people to beware when buying cars online after reports of buyers being duped after using online websites.
Investigators have been told that vehicles are being offered for sale on sites such as eBay, Gumtree and Carsales.
A buyer makes an inquiry and is told that the seller is a member of the Australian Defence Force, sometimes identifying himself as Steve Rodriguez or Sean Clifton, and about to be deployed overseas.
The buyer is told that the sale is urgent hence the low price.
Buyers are then told to transfer money via numerous means to a third party or bank and once the money is received communication all but ceases.
Police are also warning people that they need to do thorough research before committing to providing funds.
