SOUTH BEND, Ind. –
Crime Stoppers and Integra came together Saturday morning for a “Shred Identity Theft” event.
It began at 8 a.m. and people could take their personal and business documents to the event to be shredded on-site, for a $10 donation.
Many people fall victim to identity theft. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as nine million Americans are victims of identity theft per year.
Crime Stoppers Coordinator Kayla Miller said it is a problem that needs to be addressed.
“Unfortunately people are hitting young, old, middle-age, and everybody in between. It’s so easy for them. You know if you don’t take the proper steps, it can easily get your identity,” said Miller
People could shred their paper trail for a donation of $10 to Crime Stoppers.
“Without the donations from our supporters out here today, we can’t continue our program, we won’t have any funds to pay for our tipsters so absolutely crucial that we have everybody come out and support us today,” Miller added.
The money raised goes to help Crime Stoppers fund their reward programs for people who provide information leading to criminal arrests in the community.
