The stabbings happened in the gym during physical education class where a large fight broke out.
Raleigh, North Carolina – A large fight that happened on Monday at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School resulted in the stabbing death of one teenage student. Another student was also stabbed and remains hospitalized.
The unidentified 14-year-old juvenile suspect is in custody and has been charged with murder, reports ABC11. The suspect is also a student.
The incident started at about 11 a.m. during a physical education class. A large fight broke out in the gym, and a Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School SRO radioed for emergency services after two students were stabbed, reports CBS17.
Both victims were taken to a local hospital. The 15-year-old victim died of his injuries, while the 16-year-old sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
During the ordeal, the school went into Code Red lockdown. Classes were cancelled on Tuesday, and counselors will be available this week for students and school employees.
Cell phone video of the fight circulated around social media and will be used as evidence by authorities.
In response to the stabbings, the school said in a statement: “Our hearts go out to the victim’s loved ones. Please keep them and all of those that have been impacted by this loss in your thoughts … please know that the student who passed away was a valued member of our school community, and we grieve this loss alongside his loved ones,” reports ABC11.
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper also made the following statement about the incident:
“We are heartbroken for the students, educators and families of Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School, and we grieve this tragic loss. We cannot accept violence in our schools, and we must continue to work to identify threats and ensure the safety of students and teachers so they can focus on teaching and learning.”
In response to the tragedy, the Wake County School Board’s safety and security committee is reevaluating the district’s school violence prevention programs, reports CBS17.
