Waco, Tx (FOX 44) – A jury has sentenced 39-year-old Bryant K. Dotson to 30 years in prison without parole after finding him guilty of repeatedly sexually abusing a girl starting when she was eight years old.
The victim was ten when family members became suspicious. They caught the girl engaging in self-harming behavior. Waco Police were called and started their investigation, with Dotson being arrested on charges of continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14.
At trial, the victim described what had happened to her. Relatives and expert medical professionals were also called to testify.
During the punishment phase, prosecutors presented information on Dotson’s criminal history, including prior convictions for aggravated assault, bail jumping, harassment, burglary and drug possession.
In a statement issued by the District Attorney’s Office, it was reported that on Thursday morning,
after his conviction, jailers preparing to bring Dotson to court for his punishment phase discovered a razor and a sharpened “shank” which Dotson had concealed on his body.
Prior to trial, Dotson had rejected a plea offer of 35 years in prison with parole-eligibility after
half of that time.
Assistant District Attorneys Jessica Washington and Luke McCowan, who prosecuted the case, issued the following statement:
“The courageous voice of a child describing things that no child should know is
powerful evidence. We are grateful to this brave young woman and also to the
Sheriff’s deputies who kept our courtroom safe today. ”
