In at least one case, the YouTube channel run by the bloggers was hacked and the Gmail account used to operate the channel was also compromised.
The four bloggers were contacted and asked to advertise various products for promotion. “The fraudsters pretend to be the original account holders and then search for victims from the bloggers’ friend list. They will then coax them to invest in crypto and also highlight that he or she has earned two-three times,” said an officer. Sources said there are exchanges that operate through apps where Indian currency has to be first converted into the trading currency, usually US dollars. Once this conversion takes place, it can be utilized to invest in crypto. But the accused transferred this amount to some third party apps, which were generated by the fraudsters.
This is not the first time that Instagram accounts in Kolkata have been hacked. “This time, the fraud seems to be more organised,” said a cyber expert. Cops have asked neitzens to stop using Instagram as an authorised account to sign into third party apps like dating services and games.
