Pune has witnessed a significant surge in cases of cybercrime as it reported 357 cases in 2022 compared to 225 cases in the previous year, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report made public on Sunday.
As per the report, the cybercrime cases saw a jump of 58.67 per cent, rising from 225 cases in 2021 to 357 cases in 2022. In 2020, Pune had recorded 238 cybercrime cases. The most common motives of cybercriminals are fraud and sexual exploitation, according to the report.
The majority of these cases were filed under the Information Technology Act, covering offences like online banking fraud, computer-related offences, identity theft, cheating by personation, and the transmission of obscene/sexually explicit content in electronic form.
This is consistent with the state-level trend, with Maharashtra recording 8,249 cases of cybercrime in 2022 up from 5,562 cases in 2021, and 5,496 cases in 2020.
While crimes against children decreased by 12.33 per cent in Pune in 2022, crimes against women, Scheduled Castes (SC), economic offences, and cybercrimes witnessed a 28.34 per cent, 90.62 per cent, 45.10 per cent, and 58.67 per cent rise, respectively.
The report indicates a notable increase of 28.34 per cent in crimes against women, with 2,074 cases registered in 2022 compared to 1,616 in 2021. The majority of cases were related to cruelty by husbands or their relatives, followed by kidnapping and abduction.
Overall, crime cases in Pune have seen a 9.28 per cent increase, with 14,173 cases recorded in 2022 under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) or Special and Local Laws (SLL), compared to 12,969 in 2021 and 35,847 in 2020. These cases predominantly involve offences against the human body, hurt, simple hurt, assault on women, kidnapping, abduction, and death by negligence, among others.
Crimes against children decreased by 12.33 per cent in 2022, with 732 cases registered, mainly related to kidnapping and abduction. Crimes against senior citizens also went down by 54 per cent to 69 cases compared to 150 cases in 2021. Offences primarily included hurt, theft, forgery, cheating, robbery, and fraud.
