The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a traffic crash that claimed the life of an infant from Salem.

Authorities tell 21 News that 8-month-old Finn Smith passed away Saturday at Akron Children’s Hospital.

The baby was taken to the hospital with serious injuries following a three-vehicle crash in Goshen Township, Friday afternoon.

Troopers say a Chevy Impala being driven by 43-year-old Rebecca Yoder of Beloit failed to yield to a truck at the intersection of Route 534 and Middletown Road.

According to the patrol, Yoder’s car hit the back of the truck, causing the truck to veer left of center into the path of a crossover SUV being driven by Bradley Smith of Salem.

Bradley Smith was seriously injured in the resulting head-on crash. The eight-month-old, who was in a child safety seat in the back of the car suffered life-threatening injuries.

Bradley Smith is the current Head coach of Youngstown State University’s Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams.

YSU offered their condolences to the Smith Family in a Facebook post Monday afternoon.

Also included was a GoFundMe campaign to support funeral costs and recovery expenses for the Smith family. You can find that GoFundMe page here.

Yoder and 68-year-old John Burford who was driving the truck, both received minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation as of Monday afternoon, and no charges have yet been filed.
