A 2-year-old boy in Norwalk, Ohio, found a gun in his parents’ nightstand and fatally shot his mother, who was 8 months pregnant, according to the local police department.

On June 16, 31-year-old Laura Ilg called 911 and said her son had accidentally shot her with a pistol. Soon after she called, officers arrived at her home and transported her to a local hospital, where she had an emergency C-section. Her unborn son was pronounced dead roughly an hour after she called police, and Ilg was pronounced dead about three hours later, according to the Norwalk Reflector.

In an interview with WOIO of Cleveland, Norwalk Police Chief David Smith said Ilg and her husband, Alek, normally kept the bedroom locked, but the child got into the room while she was doing laundry. Although the home was equipped with many child-safety features, several baby gates that were usually closed were left open at the time of the accident, according to Smith.

In addition to the pistol, officials also found a 12-gauge shotgun and an airsoft rifle in the home, according to CNN.

As of now, no charges have been filed in the deaths of the mother and the unborn child. The case will be forwarded to Huron County Prosecutor’s Office, CNN reported.
