It’s a project that has been in the works since 2015: Treasure Coast Safety Village. And St. Lucie County leaders are excited they are one step closer in the development of this community that aims to promote safety education for children and adults. “If it saves just one person’s life, right there, you’ve done your job. And I have a feeling this will save more than one person’s life,” Port St. Lucie Councilwoman Stephanie Morgan told WPBF 25 News. Our local school districts, our city and county municipalities will be involved. Our hospital systems are involved,” Ronda Cerulli, coordinator for Safe Kids Florida, told WPBF 25 News. There will be safety courses on a wide range of topics, including how to escape if there is a fire and how to safely swim in a pool. “No child should ever have to have a loss of life from drowning whenever it’s preventable,” St. Lucie County Board of Commissioners Chair Cathy Townsend said. “We see about 15,000 children a year in our emergency rooms just related to unintentional injury. So, the goal of this village long term would be to see that number drop drastically,” Cerulli said. The village is located in the Wylder Development near Glades Cutoff and Midway Road. Officials aim to protect not only children but also older people. “They need assistance in learning … all the scams, the phone calls, the internet and everything,” Morgan said. “Sometimes, the elderly can come to stuff like this, and they can volunteer. And it’s been proven medically that as you age, and you don’t have family close by, for you to pair them with a child is actually beneficial in their health,” Townsend said.
