Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, in collaboration with Columbia University and Stony Brook University, have used a universal method to produce an array of designed metallic and semiconductor 3D nanostructures.

These structures hold the potential to become the building blocks for next-generation semiconductor devices, neuromorphic computing, and advanced energy applications.

The innovative technique involves a “hacked” form of DNA, directing the molecules to organize themselves into precise 3D patterns. This method, the first of its kind, produces nanostructures from multiple material classes. The study highlights the potential for advanced manufacturing at the nanoscale.
