A man charged with indecent treatment of a child one day after being released from custody has asked a judge for bail.
North Queensland man Wesley Pedro Corporal has been in pre-sentence custody since August 7, charged with indecent treatment of a child under 16, drug possession, and take/attempt to take a prohibited item into a corrective services facility.
The prosecution opposed Corporal’s application for bail on the basis of his lengthy criminal history and his ability to intimidate witnesses.
Corporal’s lawyer offered for his client to be bailed to a Doomadgee address to reduce the risk of contact with witnesses, but Magistrate Kenneth Taylor did not agree.
Speaking on the indecent treatment charge, Mr Taylor said, “I regard the serious nature of the offence and the fact he’s alleged to have committed this on, basically, the day he was released from custody previously.”
Bail was denied, and Corporal will next face a committal-mention on January 29, 2024.
