An Post warns of smishing scam | #coronavirus | #scams | #covid19

An Post has issued a new warning to customers about another smishing scam via a text message.

Numerous people across the country are being hit with the latest scam which references an undelivered package and asks for payment on behalf of An Post.

Customers are contacted by a text message which mentions outstanding shipping costs and has a link to “Track your package”.

The message links to a fraudulent An Post branded phishing site where customers are asked to provide personal information and card details.

With Covid-19 leading to an increase in online shopping and home delivery usage, scammers are attempting to take advantage of possible consumer confusion.

One customer – Colette Blanch, from Graiguenamanagh, Co Kilkenny – received such a text this week and is warning others about the scam.

“I just got a text saying my parcel couldn’t be delivered as postage wasn’t paid and click on the link to pay. It brings you to an An Post tracking system.

“I am waiting on a parcel but with all the scams going around, I decided to ring An Post and they told me that they are aware of this and it is a scam. An Post would never send a text or email asking for money so just be aware,” she said.

An Post is asking customers to be scam aware if they receive these kinds of messages not only from them but also from other businesses, service providers and financial institutions.

In many cases the layout or language used in the messages are an indication they are not genuine.

Angus Laverty, An Post public affairs manager, said the company was doing everything it can to make life more difficult for scammers.

“There have been a raft of such scams and phishing attempts on many of our leading firms and financial institutions in recent months.

“We have been successful in having many of them taken down but they keep coming. We have issued regular warnings to customers to be scam aware and are constantly upgrading our security and IT protocols to make life more difficult for the scammers,” he added.
