Chennai: Three men, armed with machetes, unleashed terror and went on a hacking spree, attacking at least 12 people in a neighbourhood at Thirumullaivoyal on Thursday night. While two have been arrested by Avadi police, one is absconding.The trio Abinesh, 23, Vishnu, 22, and Muthu, 24, of Ganapathy Nagar in Thirumullaivoyal were air-conditioner mechanics. Police investigations revealed that they were serial offenders and used to gather outside their housing quarters after allegedly smoking ganja. They passed lewd comments at women.On Thursday evening, Seethalakashmi, 38, questioned them as they taunted her. As the trio picked up an argument with her, the woman’s teenage son, Kamalesh, 17, came in support of his mother. The gang then took out a machete and attacked both the mother and the son prompting the other residents in the neighbourhood to come to their rescue. But, the gang attacked two more people Chandralekha, 40 and her son Vijay, 20 when they came to their rescue.After this, the gang went on a rampage, attacking eight more people on the road. As panic gripped the entire neighbourood, passersby and residents ran for their lives. Some of them called up the police control room and alerted cops.Based on information, Thirumullaivoyal police reached the spot and nabbed Abinesh and Vishnu. They have launched a hunt for Muthu, who is absconding. Police rushed the injured to private hospitals in Ambattur and Thirumullaivoyal. The culprits were booked for assault and other offences under IPC as well as the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Women Harassment Act. The arrested duo was remanded in judicial custody.When contacted, assistant commissioner of police, Avadi, Anbazhagan told TOI that the trio were drunk at the time of the incident and some of the residents were injured when they tried to rescue each other. “We did not receive any complaint regarding them earlier as the residents themselves had been warning them whenever they passed lewd comments,” he said.
