Arrest made in social media threat against MacEwan University

Edmonton Police have arrested a 19-year-old man in Sherwood Park while investigating a social media threat against MacEwan University.

The arrest was made without incident just before noon on Tuesday. Charges are pending against the suspect. Police say there is no risk to the campus.

The social media post was reported to the Edmonton Police Service early Tuesday morning.

“The university has increased security and EPS will have a significant police presence in and around the university,” MacEwan spokesman David Beharry said in a media release.

Classes continued to run as usual and the university was planning to keep students updated via its website.

MacEwan’s head of security is expected to comment later today.
