CENTRAL TEXAS (FOX 44) – It’s been nearly three weeks since Ascension hospitals had a ransomware attack. Computer systems are down as a result.

A woman who works in the Emergency Department at an Ascension Hospital in Central Texas says she’s going into work in tears and afraid of possible mistakes.

The company announced an investigation into cybersecurity concerns on May 8. Officials later called it a ransomware attack.

Electronic health records and systems to order certain tests, procedures and medications were unavailable. This put pressure on nurses to provide both medical care and clerical work, leading to some mistakes.

“We’re talking patients birthdays are wrong, their names are wrong. Orders are being misread. Already notified all of my loved ones and all of my family members that they are not to go to an Ascension facility until further notice, for their safety,” the employee says.

Ascension said it “continues to work around the clock with industry-leading cyber security experts to safely restore operations across our network.”
