Back to School Safety Tips From the Lewiston Police Department | Idaho | #childsafety | #kids | #chldern | #parents | #schoolsafey

The Lewiston Police Department wants to remind drivers to please slow down and obey the speed limit in the school zones. The speed limit in a school zone is 20 MPH anytime the yellow lights are flashing, and in particular school zones, it is 20 MPH Monday through Friday between 7:00 am and 4:00 pm as designated by the school zone sign.

The Lewiston Police Department also wants to remind drivers to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk, obey the crossing guards’ directions, and be extra aware of our students walking to and from school.

Extra patrols will be in and around the schools encouraging drivers to slow down and obey the law. Speeding in a school zone carries a fine of $156.50.

They also want to remind drivers that passing a school bus loading or unloading children is a misdemeanor offense. Drivers approaching a school bus that is stopped with lights flashing and the stop arm extended must come to a complete stop before reaching the school bus. They shall not proceed past the bus until the bus resumes motion and the visual signals are no longer actuated.

Let’s make this a safe and enjoyable beginning to the 2023 school year. And as always, please remember to wear your seatbelt and have your children buckled up in approved child safety seats.
