BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Basking Ridge High School alum Angelina Xu was recently awarded another scholarship – ESET North America’s Eighth Annual Women in Cybersecurity Scholarship. A 2021 graduate of Ridge High School, Xu is one of four women to win the scholarship.

Now a sophomore at MIT, Xu is working on a B.S. in electrical engineering and computer science and holds a 5.0 average.

“A major challenge facing the cybersecurity industry is the shortage of skilled professionals. As a woman in STEM, I am aware of the obstacles that I may face in the field. However, I am determined to overcome these challenges and become a leader in the industry. I believe the most successful teams are diverse in their perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds. Committed to encouraging and supporting other women to pursue careers in STEM, I hope to become a leader and mentor,” said Xu in a statement to ESET.

During COVID-19, Xu who was a member of her high school Biology Club, Science National Honor Society, and Ridge Research Club, helped to get reduce financial barriers, such as registration fees for STEM competitions, to help her peers, according to ESET.

After her freshman year at MIT, Xu held a summer internship at the Waksman Institute of Microbiology where she was able to successfully publish four novel DNA sequences to the international NCBI database, according to ESET.

In the future, Xu hopes to develop algorithms that can identify and quarantine malicious software before it can cause any damage to a network or system, according to ESET.

ESET is a global digital security company whose annual Women in Cybersecurity Scholarship aims to help address the underrepresentation of women working in cybersecurity.

In April, Xu received a $25,000 scholarship from Chick-fil-A. She was one of 13 community members selected nationwide for this inaugural community scholarship, as part of the new Chick-fil-A™ Community Scholars program.
