Police arrested a leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the ruling Awami League-backed student organisation, and his father for hacking a couple at Puthia upazila in Rajshahi on Saturday night.

The arrestees are Swaran Rahman, 22, assistant general secretary of the BCL Puthia municipality unit, and his father Selim Ibne Tipu of Kathalbaria Stadium area in the upazila.

Faruk Hossain, officer-in-charge of the Puthia police station, told New Age that they arrested the duo accused on Saturday night after Jahangir Hossain, one of the victims, had filed a case against three people with the police station.

He said that the duo arrestees were sent to jail through a court on Sunday noon.

Jahangir Hossain said that BCL leader Swaran and his brother Sayek Rahman, also organising secretary of the municipality unit, had been threatening them for long suspecting that they had been spreading news that the leaders were involved in bird hunting, which is allegedly illegal.

He said that Swaran and Sayek carried out an attack on them with a hammer and locally made sharp weapons at about 8:00pm on Saturday when they went to Selim Ibne Tipu to lodge a verbal complaint against his sons.

Mehedi Hasan, son of Jahangir Hossain, said that three fingers of his mother’s right hand were severed as she went to save his father when Swaran attempted to hack him with a sharp weapon.

BCL leader Sayek, who went into hiding following the incident, however, could not be reached over the phone for his comment.
