FRANKFORT, Ky. – Promising news for parents concerned about the safety of their children while at school.

Back-to-school is here, and the safety of students is a leading issue on a parent’s mind. In Thursday’s Team Kentucky update, Gov. Andy Beshear said Kentucky is a leader in school safety.

There are currently 685 student resource officers employed by Kentucky schools, which is the most in state history, according to the governor.

Since just last year, Beshear says the number of schools with SRO’s has increased by 33%.

“The comprehensive approach to school safety on mental health, threat assessment teams, suicide prevention, and having a trusted adult for all students. As you know, school resource officers can be that trusted adult, so it’s very important for us to have our school resource officers in our schools” says Ben Wilcox, State School Security marshal.

Authorities say that since the passing of the school safety and resilience act in 2019, the number of full-time school resource officers has increased by 66%.
