ESCANABA — Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Upper Peninsula serving Escanaba and Gladstone has six girls and two boys who are waiting to be matched. Anyone who was part of Big Brothers Big Sisters in the Escanaba/Gladstone area and who would like to be matched again is encouraged to apply. Mentor “Bigs” are all ages from high school students to retirees. It only takes four hours a month and we encourage our volunteers to do things that they do in their everyday life. Mentoring is fun, flexible, and a powerful way to make a real difference in one’s community by providing a safe space for a young person to explore, learn and grow, igniting their potential for a bright future.

Big Brothers Big Sisters also offers great group activities for our matches such as cooking classes, movie night, hiking, bowling, and trips to Pictured Rocks and Lambeau Field.

“We have many options for volunteering” said Jayne Letts, executive director. “Mentoring is flexible for people with busy schedules and can be an exceptional, rewarding volunteer experience. You can enjoy all sorts of activities together including hiking, biking, group sports, reading, crafting, visiting a farm or museum, sharing a meal together or other activities that you already participate in and would like to share with a young person. You can participate as an individual, a couple or a family. There is an option for everyone.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters is the only evidence based mentoring program in Delta County. Evidence based equals proven. Using the Gold Standard, research has proven that the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring model makes a positive impact on youth behavior, belonging, emotions and educational success.

A dues paying member of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America federation, Big Brothers Big Sisters in Delta County provides trainings and professional support to all volunteers, parents and youth. Our membership affords many opportunities to our staff, board members, volunteers and families that include excellent funding opportunities and the highest in child safety standards which is so important to volunteers and parents/guardians. Our affiliation with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America ensures that our agency is strong and provides the highest in quality mentoring. Big Brothers Big Sisters is also a member of the State of Michigan Big Brothers Big Sisters Alliance which provides deep connections with our fellow agencies across the state along with funding opportunities.

This is Big Brothers Big Sisters 44th year of serving families and youth in Delta County.
