BLOUNT COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — On Tuesday, the Blount County Sheriff’s Office announced that Chris Hansen, formerly the host of To Catch a Predator, filmed a sting operation in Blount County last week.
Sheriff Mark Moon took to Facebook Tuesday morning to announce that Hansen had approached him months ago about doing a sting operation in Blount County.
“He has been doing these predator stings all over the country and he was interested in doing one in Alabama,” Moon said. “He asked me if we would be interested in doing a child sex predator sting in Blount County. I told him that we absolutely would.”
According to Moon, BCSO performed the sting operation on Thursday, Jan. 25, and Friday, Jan. 26.
Moon said that on Saturday he sat down with Hansen and did an interview discussing the arrests that were made and the cases that were made. No further information was given during the Facebook live on who was arrested or how many were arrested.
Prior to the operation, Hansen introduced Moon to Sheriff Chris Swanson from Genesee County, Michigan, and the Genesee Human Oppression Strike Team (G.H.O.S.T.). Together, they planned a sting operation for Blount County and Swanson sent three of his G.H.O.S.T. team members down to Blount County when the sting operation was ready.
“I wanted to start this program so that we can be proactive and not just reactive; Not just waiting for victims to come to us and make complaints and us have to investigate these horrible crimes against them,” Moon said.
In March, Moon said he will take some BCSO deputies to Genesee County to watch them do a sting operation so BCSO can be “well-versed in this.”
“For me, that is the worst crime that is out there – people that victimize our children like this,” Moon said.
Three episodes from the Blount County sting operation will be available for streaming on Hansen’s platform, TruBlu, on Thursday.
