Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death for children. According to the state highway patrol, 90 percent of children that die in traffic accidents die because they are not in a child safety seat or are not properly fitted in one. However, local organizations are hoping to address that issue.

Brenner Children’s Hospital of Wake Forest Baptist Health along with Safe Kids Worldwide partnered with the Winston-Salem Fire Department Wednesday to hold a free child car seat check and hot car demonstration.

The monthly event allows parents to come in and get their children’s car seats checked for safety and properly fitted. Wake Forest Baptist Health also gives child safety seats away for free to those whose car seats don’t pass inspection.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Causey said most people don’t even know their car seats aren’t right for their children.

“80 – 90 percent of the people that come through have child seats that are outdated, or they’re not fit properly,” Causey said. “And this is very dangerous.”

The event also featured a hot car demonstration, which showcases just how quickly a car heats up even on mild days during the Fall season. It emphasizes to parents just how important it is to never leave a child – or a pet – in the car, even if just for a few minutes.
