Britain on Tuesday summoned the chargé d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy in London to express its condemnation of purported cyber activities conducted by Chinese state-affiliated actors targeting British democratic institutions.

“The (Foreign Office) set out the Government’s unequivocal condemnation of Chinese state-affiliated organisations and individuals undertaking malicious cyber activity against UK democratic institutions and parliamentarians,” a spokesperson for Britain’s Foreign Office said in a statement.

“The UK Government would not tolerate such threatening activity, and would continue to take strong action with partners across the globe to respond.”

The US and UK on Monday accused hackers linked to the Chinese state of being behind “malicious” cyber campaigns targeting political figures.

The British government has accused China-affiliated hackers of orchestrating an attack that resulted in the unauthorized access of data belonging to millions of voters. This incident has further strained relations between the U.K. and China, particularly in the realm of technology. Over the years, tensions have escalated due to measures taken by the British government aimed at mitigating national security threats posed by Chinese technology firms.
