Police in Bundibugyo district is holding 18 individuals arrested on Saturday while operating and playing cards in a bar, acts that violate presidential directives that require among other things, bars to remain closed as one of the ways to combat the spread of COVID-19.
The operation was carried out in Vision Pub in Nyahuka town council, Bundibugyo district.
The suspects have been identified as Kisembo David, a lawyer and the owner of the Pub, Byamukama John, District Inspector of schools, Kamuhanda Nicholas, Human Resource Officer, Abas Luis ambulance, Driver, Ngozi Julius, Assistant Veterinary Officer, Masereka Godfrey, a Head Teacher, Balinkunda Silver District, Physical Planner, Balyebulya Godfrey, Human Resource Officer, Monday Onesmus, a teacher and Katuramu Francis, a teacher.
Others are Bitious Deus, Nursing officer, Monday Fred, Mugisha Patrick, Ssenyonga Tonny, Boliki Wilson, Nyamusesa Amon, Sabiti Gerald and Kyomugisha Anita.
“They were got playing mweso, playing cards and largely drinking beer,” says Police.
The suspects have since charged with the offence of negligence with intent to spread dangerous virus c/s 171 of penal code Act.
Police says related operations will be conducted in other areas as they continue to implement the directives.
Government banned all public gatherings including among other things suspending school going, entertainments events, church services, weddings with more than 10 people, public transport to reduce the risk of transmitting the Coronavirus.
Although some of them have since been allowed to resume operations with restrictions, bars remain closed.
Uganda’s confirmed COVID-19 cases currently stand at 859 with 794 recoveries and no related fatalities.
