Last year, KMOX reported on a system of cameras being installed in the St. Louis Hills neighborhood. Last week, those cameras paid off.
When a six-year-old boy was abducted and sexually assaulted in a vacant home, the child’s mother turned to Tom Scheifler, the chairman of the neighborhood’s safety committee. Scheifler designed the security app that connects the cameras.
“Shortly after the mother contacted me, I was contacted by the police department,” Scheifler said. “They asked for my assistance in locating anything that would be useful in tracking down the suspect.”
Scheifler got in touch with individual camera owners.
“I immediately found the first set of video showing the person that matched the description that was provided by the mother and the police,” he said.
Osmani Haji Gul was identified and arrested. He lived on Chippewa, east of Hampton, police said, and he confessed to the sexual assault. He also confessed to the attempted kidnapping of another child earlier in July.
Scheifler tells KMOX he’s glad the neighborhood’s cameras were able to play a role in solving the case.
“Credit goes to the police,” he said. “They did all the necessary work.”
