Child Care Board Director Joan Crawford admits that they get complaints from parents of special needs children crying out that they feels as though they have no where to turn for justice.

In light of a father airing his plight after a close call with his Down Syndorme daughter when a postman entered his home and her room when she was left unattended for a moment, Crawford said that his frustration over the way the police handled the matter is not the first of such. She said that he is not alone.

She confessed:

“Sometimes we do get complaints about what is perceived as not hearing the voice of the vulnerable and that is something that we really need to pay attention to those special persons and how do we get the information before the police and before the law courts.”

Crawford told the radio station moderator, “It was unfortunate that the child, the parent and the child had to undergo that and we need to, one of the things that we have been trying to do is public education. We’ve been trying to get persons in the various communities to understand what is abuse, what is the impact of abuse and how we as ordinary citizens can protect our children. That is the issue of the mandatory reporting as well.”

She said that people need to speak up to help protect the nation’s children from all forms of abuse.

“Couple years back we had a slogan that said if you see something, say something and that is what we are encouraging all Barbadians to do. If you see something, say something, but our public education and our training for all persons is something that we working on and we will continue to work with the various agencies.”

She said that their work is cut out for them with the police to answer that question of “How do we get matters addressed?”
