#childmolestor | Deaf Derby woman tells of abuse at hands of control freak sex offender | #parenting | #parenting | #kids

A Deaf and autistic Derby woman has bravely told of the years of abuse she suffered at the hands of her sex offender boyfriend.

Natalie Burton said “expert manipulator” Craig Barton won her back time and time again as she “just wanted to be normal, have a boyfriend, a house and settle down”.

But over the years she was with him she says he hit her, threatened to kill her parents and hid his criminal record for having child sex abuse images.

At one stage, he even moved her to live in a Derbyshire village, near Belper, far from her family and friends.

Once there he took her phone, purse and keys from her so she could not leave the house.

He even disconnected the internet when he was not there, cutting off all lines of communication.

The 27-year-old, of Kingsway, said when she did go to court to support him, a woman screamed at her mother “how can you let your daughter be with him he’s a paedophile?”.

Until that day she had not know about his crimes.

Now, Natalie has come forward after seeing Barton’s face on Derbyshire Live, after he was jailed again for child sex offences.

Natalie said: “You can imagine my horror, my fear and the shock of seeing his face plastered all over Derbyshire Live and the Derby Telegraph.

“At first when I saw the story I was frightened, upset and angry.

“But then I realised it gave me the chance to have my say, to warn others, to stop him hurting others and to stop him preying on deaf women as well as children.”

Natalie said she met Barton on an internet dating site in 2011 when she was aged 18.

She said: “He soon became very overwhelming, jealous and possessive.

“He didn’t like me seeing my friends and I split with him but I missed him and he moved to a flat in Woods Lane, Stockbrook.

“That’s when he hit me for the first time, but he was an expert manipulator and I stayed with him.”

Natalie has had to rebuild her life after finding out controlling partner Craig Barton was a paedophile

Natalie said over the next couple of years they would be together and then apart but that she kept going back to him as she wanted her life to be, in her own words, “normal”.

She said by then she was doing an apprenticeship and the Royal School for the Deaf in Ashbourne Road and in the summer of 2013 took an overdose.

Natalie said: “In March 2014 he found a cottage in Heage which is a good 40 minutes’ drive from my parents.

“That’s when things went really bad.

“He knew I hated using buses because of my autism. We were in the middle of nowhere. I couldn’t go anywhere

“He would disconnect the internet, take my phone to work with him, take my purse saying he had no money.

“He would take my key so I couldn’t go out, he stopped me talking to my family and friends.

“If we went anywhere he stuck to me like glue and told me he would kill my family if I told them anything.”

Natalie said despite this, she agreed to marry Barton and her mother even paid a deposit at Calke Abbey for the reception.

But in early 2015 she found out her then fiancé was due to appear in court.

Natalie said: “Eventually he admitted he had been looking on a porn site and that he accidentally clicked on a bad site but that his barrister said it was nothing and that he would be let off.

“We went to Leicester Crown Court, he gave me a hug, kissed me, said he loved me and gave me his phone, wallet and car keys just in case and said he would see me later.

“But he was jailed for two years and a woman came out of the courtroom and screamed at us ‘how can you let your daughter be with him, he’s a paedophile?’.

“I cried out and hid my face in my mum’s shoulder and my mum said to her ‘I’m sorry, we don’t know what you’re talking about, we don’t know what he’s done’.

“Then his barrister came over and took us into a small, stuffy, windowless room. He told us that Craig had accessed images of children on the internet and had taken a photo of a little girl.

“I was hysterical, I didn’t understand, I was crying, I couldn’t breathe.”

Natalie said over the following week they cleared out the Heage cottage and found letters from police, courts and probation service which listed “everything he had done”.

She said in 2016 the courts handed Barton a restraining order not to contact Natalie indefinitely and that in May 2017 he received another 16-month sentence.

Natalie said in June 2019 he received a further three years for child sex offences.

In March of this year Barton, 38 and of no fixed address, was jailed for another three years for breaching the terms of his sexual harm prevention order.

Natalie said: “He is a very dangerous man.

“I know I will never get the answers to my questions but I have learned to put it behind me and carry on with my life.”
