#childsafety | Student Summer Readiness Program Introduced in Kalamazoo | #parenting | #parenting | #kids

A new program for students who may have fallen behind in 2020 is being introduced in Kalamazoo.

According to Mlive.com, the Summer Readiness Program is for students of all ages who struggled academically during this past school year. Public schools in Kalamazoo remain some of the last in the state to continue virtual learning for this school year. However, the intention is to be back to in person learning by the start of the 2021 school year.

The Summer Readiness Program will be conducted in person Monday – Thursday from 8:30am – 2:30pm over two three week sessions. According to Superintendent Rita Raichoudhuri, these sessions will also be offered virtually for those who prefer it.

Superintendent Rita Raichoudhuri went on to say,

Our Summer Readiness program is an initial step in starting to undo some of the damage caused by COVID-19. You’ll notice that we are not calling it summer school because it isn’t. This was not a typical year. Our students didn’t fail, our children survived a pandemic, and they are still surviving it.

Student eligibility for the Summer Readiness Program will be determined by teacher recommendations. Here’s the schedule divided by age group:

  • For High School: June 28 to July 15 and July 20 to Aug. 5 at Loy Norrix High School
  • For Middle School: June 28 to July 15 and July 19 to Aug. 5 at Hillside Middle School
  • For Elementary School: June 28 to July 15 and July 19 to Aug. 5 at Northeastern, Parkwood-Upjohn, Woodward and King-Westwood and Greenwood for incoming kindergarten students

Locations for the in-person learning will be finalized once staffing is complete and transportation will be provided by the district.

As well, the district has just launched a new app to help parents stay connected to their child’s school. You can find it on the Apple App Store or on Google Play.

For those looking for a job, the Kalamazoo Public Schools are in the process of hiring for a number of positions from teachers to campus safety officers and everything in between. Find more information here.
