Halloween is such a fun time for kids. As you begin to plan for the holiday, take some time to look at what will make their costumes safe.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says safe costumes are:
Flame resistant. “When purchasing costumes, masks, beards and wigs, look for flame-resistant fabrics, such as nylon or polyester, or look for the label ‘flame resistant.’”
Brightly colored. This makes your child visible to drivers and others.
Reflective. This also aids in ensuring your child is visible in all circumstances. The CPSC suggests you “decorate or trim costumes and treat bags with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car’s headlights. Bags or sacks also should be brightly colored or decorated with reflective tape.”
Well-fitted. Avoid costumes that drag on the ground. You don’t want your child falling down as a result of tripping on a long train, for example. Added bonus: Costume shoes should be well-fitting and sturdy.
Secure. Does your child’s costume have a mask? “Make sure it fits securely, provides adequate ventilation and has holes large enough to allow full vision.”
