Back to school means so much more in 2023.Cincinnati’s Dohn Academy is starting the year with more than classroom ABCs.“You hear about it on the news all the time, schools going under lockdown drills because there was a shooting,” Dohn director Ramone Davenport said.All staff members are participating in active shooter response workshops, which have proven to be lifesaving.“It can happen anywhere at any time, so we just want to make them aware,” Davenport said.He said safety is something that might be forgotten because teachers are focused on their classrooms.“We want to bring awareness to everything that could possibly happen in a school year,” Davenport said.Rufus Johnson is a gun safety advocate and a certified active shooter training instructor.“Your life is on the line, so we want to make it as real as possible,” Johnson said.Dohn students will also now receive school credit once they successfully pass a gun safety training class.“It’s very important. It’s something that we need in all schools,” Johnson said.
