City clears up confusion around trail camera found near Steinbach Splash Park – | #childpredator | #onlinepredator | #sextrafficing

The City of Steinbach is addressing a trail camera found in a tree near the splash pad in E.A. Friesen Park.

Earlier this week, a resident discovered the camera and reported it to the RCMP, thinking someone shady was spying on kids at the splash pad. Police officers responded to the call and took the camera down.

Since then, rumours have been swirling on social media about a possible child predator.

Russ Dyck, Head of Steinbach Parks and Recreation, says the camera is actually the city’s and it was not aimed at the splash park.

“We noticed that someone was using some of our garbage cans in the downtown area as a toilet, unfortunately. So, we are attempting to keep people safe, kids safe that are using our parks as well as our staff who are now dealing with a biohazard that they shouldn’t really have to deal with.”

Dyck says it is not uncommon for the Parks and Recreation Department to use trail cameras.

“Occasionally, we put up cameras in places where we have experienced vandalism, graffiti, or some other activity that we are trying to get to the bottom of.”

In an effort to reassure parents, Dyck reiterates “They were directly aimed at the garbage cans, the splash park wasn’t in the window at all.”

Considering the situation, Dyck says the camera will not be put back up in that location because they don’t want to scare anyone off.

In the future, if residents find cameras or anything else out of the ordinary in Steinbach’s parks, Dyck says they are encouraged to call the city directly.
