City lawyers will pay £3 million to an aviation entrepreneur after facing allegations that they orchestrated a computer hack and smear campaign against him.

It is understood that the City office of the US law firm Dechert could face a bill of £15 million after legal costs are taken into account as part of a deal in which it has not accepted liability.

It is the latest twist to an eight-year saga and is thought to be the first time that City solicitors have settled a claim involving computer hacking.

Farhad Azima, an Iranian-American businessman, alleged that his emails were hacked as part of efforts by senior officials at a Gulf investment authority to discredit him.
