Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil appears to have taken a leaf out of the book of ransomware outfits when advertising a new initiative by the government against this genre of malware.
Threat researcher Brett Callow noticed this aspect of the minister’s style, contrasting the note put out by O’Neil on X [formerly Twitter] with a notice put out by the LockBit ransomware group.
“This announcement is certainly very #LockBit-like in style. #Ransomware,” he noted in a tweet at the bottom of which he had included O’Neil’s tweet.
O’Neil wrote: “The Albanese Government is stepping up to defend Australian businesses and citizens from the scourge of ransomware.”

Below that was a graphic, in true ransomware gang-style, elaborating on what this initiative would include.
Of course, O’Neil’s language was much more airy-fairy than that which any ransomware group would use, and also less specific.
Callow made no further comment about O’Neil’s efforts but one is sure that you, gentle reader, would certainly take note of the similarities in the two styles.
