Cleveland City Schools face ransomware attack | #ransomware | #cybercrime

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (WDEF) — Cleveland City Schools faced a ransomware attack this week, but it only affected a small number of devices.

The school system said they became aware of the issue on Tuesday, August 15. An issue they say is affecting many other school districts as well.

Less than 5% of devices were impacted by this attack, according to the school system. They add that the majority of devices used by students, faculty and staff are still operational.

Sensitive information is secure offsite, and officials do not believe any of this data has been compromised.

In addition, they state that no student devices have been affected.

“Our technology team is working tirelessly to ensure the integrity of our systems and data. We want to emphasize that despite this challenge, our students will remain on a regular schedule. Strong backup systems are in place, and a third-party recovery company is assisting us to ensure that there is minimal disruption. Cleveland City Schools’ cyber incident response plan was activated as soon as an attack was detected,” Cleveland City Schools said.

Officials are investigating and are in close contact with city police and homeland security.

They will provide updates to staff, families and the community as information becomes available.
