|About the Position: The Computer and Network Systems Manager (CNSM) position involves three main areas of responsibility: technical support and web management (roughly 65% of the position), administrative support (roughly 20% of the position), and instructor mentoring and training (roughly 15% of the position). The position carries considerable autonomy and responsibility. The CNSM reports directly to the English Department chair, and offers key support (managerial and technical) to the entire department, and to the Professional and Technical Writing program and to the First Year Writing program in particular. The English Department strives to further Western’s mission to bring together individuals of diverse backgrounds and perspectives in an inclusive, student-centered university that develops the potential of learners and the well-being of communities, and encourages applications from diverse candidates.
The successful candidate will provide technical support by managing the department’s eight computer labs and classrooms (including one multimedia lab) as well as managing the workstations and other multimedia technology, hardware, and software used by approximately 50 faculty, 4 staff, 30 graduate students, and hundreds of undergraduates; the successful candidate will also manage the department’s web presence and online needs. This position serves as the English Department’s primary (and usually sole) Information Technology support.
The successful candidate will provide administrative support by helping to manage the Technical and Professional Writing program; recommending purchases or updates of computer software and hardware, audio/visual equipment, and other media-production resources; and working with department leadership and the campus community on shaping the department’s future technological growth. This position represents a valued perspective in the department and in its technology-rich programs.
The successful candidate will provide instructor mentoring and training to the graduate students and faculty in the English department, to research, procure, design and implement emergent informational technologies in order to better engage students and keep the programs technologically relevant in an increasingly information-centric world. The successful candidate will also assist the Directors of the Composition and the Professional and Technical Writing programs in instructional technology planning, development, and implementation.
As a department we value the links between technology and teaching, and so we are particularly interested in candidates who will be able both to provide IT support and to contribute to the department’s larger mission of offering a high-quality education to our students.
