Convicted child molester ordered to serve four life sentences in King George | #childpredator | #kidsaftey | #childsaftey

A man convicted of molesting five boys in King George between 1988 and 2008 was ordered Thursday to serve four life sentences.

Michael Wayne Stephens, 57, of Culpeper, had previously been convicted of multiple counts of sodomy and indecent liberties in King George Circuit Court. Judge R. Michael McKinney imposed the six life sentences that had been recommended by a jury, plus another life term plus 35 years stemming from a fifth victim, but suspended all but the four life terms.

Stevens was arrested in 2019 after a man claimed that Stephens molested him when he was a child. Four more victims came forward after that, saying they too were molested by Stevens when he was living in King George.

The victims were between the ages of 6 and their late teens when the molestations took place; Stephens claimed that all of the victims were lying.

Stephens’ last convictions were in November, but his sentencing lingered after his attorney, Ghislaine Storr Burks, unsuccessfully tried to have the convictions overturned. Storr Burks did not represent Stephens during his jury trial in 2020 involving four of his victims.

Storr Burks argued that Stephens did not deserve the harsh sentence recommended by the jury. Commonwealth’s Attorney Keri Gusmann countered that Stephens’ actions were so vile that he shouldn’t have any time suspended.
