PALM DESERT, CA — A former Redlands middle school teacher sentenced to nearly 75 years in prison for molesting three teenage boys has been freed to live in Palm Desert transitional facility, according to a recent Sun article.

Since 2006, Sean Ramiro Lopez has been in custody at Mule Creek Prison in Ione. He was convicted of sexually abusing students between 1999 and 2000, and according to Mary Xjimenez, a spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Lopez has qualified for parole under California’s Elderly Parole Program. The current qualifications for that program include being aged 50 or older and serving 20 consecutive years of a sentence.

Lopez was 32 at the time of his incarceration. According to The Sun, Lopez will be 51 in June of 2024. The Board of Parole Hearings found him suitable for parole at his initial suitability hearing on Dec. 14, 2023, according to the Sun article.

During that parole hearing, Lopez said he felt “shame and guilt” about his attraction to young boys. In the transcript from that hearing, obtained by The Sun, said that he “knew it was wrong.”

During his parole hearing, Lopez said that he “did not think I was negatively impacting their lives as much as I have now over 20 years of incarceration focusing on victims of sexual abuse.”

He told the parole board that from September 1999 to February 20o2, he paid at least three middle school boys to come to his home and sexually abused them. He also carried on detailed sexual conversations with students in his classroom during lunch breaks, according to that report.

At the time of his original sentencing, Judge J. Michael Welch said that certain facts about Lopez were “the tip of the iceberg” and that he remained a “high probability risk to children in the community” if released, according to the Redlands Daily Facts report.

His parole decision was reached on April 17, and he relocated to Palm Desert in transitional housing on Santa Rosa Way. His address is listed on Megan’s Law Database, where he is listed as “low risk.”
