Convicted sex predator Gerhard Ackerman was sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes linked to a child sex abuse ring he ran.
The taxpayer will effectively be footing the bill for convicted child sex predator Gerhard Ackerman’s new advocate as he seeks leave to appeal his conviction and sentence.
Wearing a grey Quicksilver hoodie and suit pants, Ackerman appeared in the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on Thursday, where a private lawyer represented him.
The court heard that, after firing his Legal Aid lawyer in August, Ackerman applied for a new lawyer, which was refused. He then appealed Legal Aid SA’s decision, which led to the tax-funded law firm seeking counsel to represent him.
