coronavirus melbourne three men arrested after anti lockdown protests | #coronavirus | #scams | #covid19

There are concerns more anti-lockdown protests will be held across Melbourne in coming days after three demonstrators were arrested following clashes with police yesterday.

A 22-year-old man and an 18-year-old man, both from Broadmeadows, as well as a 17-year-old boy from Craigieburn were arrested during the demonstration.

The arrests come amid growing public frustration with the state government’s strict lockdown.

Premier Daniel Andrews is under pressure to set out a roadmap for the state’s pandemic recovery when the stage four restrictions in Melbourne are due to be lifted in two weeks.

Victoria Police said they will not tolerate any public gatherings that breach public health orders issued by the chief medical officer.

The three men were arrested at the Roxburgh Park area and will be issued fines for breaking the chief health officer’s stay-at-home orders, as well as traffic-related offences.

Masked protesters from a group calling themselves the lockdown ‘Resistance’ yesterday also confronted police at Meadow Heights in Melbourne. Some were wearing ‘Guy Fawkes’ style masks as they brandished flares.

Dozens of demonstrators spent the afternoon throwing flares and rocks at officers along Pascoe Vale Road.

Police officers drew pepper spray during the protest.

Footage shows a number of men being tackled to the ground by police and handcuffed.

There were protests again in Dandenong in Melbourne’s south-east last night, the latest in demonstrations that have been going on for a week. Five more fines were handed out last night.

Public health authorities are expected to comb through infection data this week as that is thought to be crucial in determining whether Melbourne moves back to stage three restrictions.

Mr Andrews defended the police response to the protests.

“Victoria Police are doing a great job, they’re out there protecting people, fining, imposing sanctions, doing the work they’re doing, is about protecting people,” Mr Andrews said yesterday.
