One councillor is seeking to change the status quo when it comes to female sexuality.

Nicole Young, People’s National Movement (PNM) Councillor for Belmont East hopes to empower women through a new community project promoting feminine care.

In a Facebook post, Councillor Young revealed the Piña Colada pack, a feminine care package which seeks to educate women and teen girls on safe sex.

She explained the motivation behind the initiative.

She wrote: “I want the young women of Belmont East to be pineapples – Be sweet. Stand tall. Wear their crown.”

“I organised a feminine care package but with a twist. For me, there must always be a message. The Piña Colada packs include the regulars (sanitary napkins, deodorants, etc) but I also included packs of condoms and literature on safe sex.

You see…I want women to have more control of the sex narrative because oftentimes they face any negative consequences of unprotected sex alone and the cycle of struggle continues.”

The teen-friendly version of the package, the Piña Colada Pack or Teen (Virgin Colada) does not include condoms.

Young said she decided to place pamphlets on the benefits of delayed sexual activity and information on dating abuse which she identified as “very rampant”.

Each package also contains a personal letter encouraging young women to know their worth and to encourage them to reach out to her if they feel the need to.

Each pack contains: 10 sanitary napkins; one deodorant; one bar of soap, one toothbrush, one tube of toothpaste, a pack of condoms (not included in teen pack), a mask, a snack, a feminine wash/pack of feminine wipes; a pamphlet on sexual health; literature on general safety tips; a letter from me encouraging them to know their worth and information on how to contact me if need be.

Young thanked all those who helped bring the pieces together and make the project a reality.

She extended her gratitude to Smith Robertson Ltd, Oscar Francois Ltd, Kappa Drugs, TT Masks, Sewa International TT, Rebirth House, Pineapple Drip TT, Leon Bernard and friends who made financial donations “because they believe in the cause”.

The Councillor extended special thanks to Alderman Aasha Permanand, Raylene Piper-Campbell and Nikki R Prescod for their continued guidance and support.

Young also thanked her team Cavelle, Simone, Stacy Ann, Shannon and Whitney who assisted in boxing the packages.
