Criminal Defense Practice Digital Forensics Analyst


The Legal Aid Society’s Criminal Practice is seeking a Digital Forensic Analyst who will be dedicated to servicing the technical and forensic needs of Legal Aid’s legal and investigative staff on case-related matters.

* Retrieve, handle, analyze, and preserve forensic evidence and data in accordance with legal requirements and forensic standards such as write-blocking technology
* Utilize chain-of-custody requirements necessary for the admissibility of evidence in court
* Create forensic copies of other data sources dictated by case-related needs. Such data sources include, but are not limited to, hard drives, portable storage media, tablets, smart phones, online sources such as iCloud and DropBox, and voice/voicemail recordings
* Train other investigative staff members on retrieving video surveillance footage in the field from various surveillance systems, including CCTV, DVR and digital-based systems
* Collect forensic evidence in the field throughout the five boroughs of NYC
* Conduct examinations of digital evidence and prepare reports and/or exhibits for use in court.
* Provide written and oral reports on related efforts and findings
* Assist legal staff in case preparation regarding data/technical forensics, as well as with setting up technology used for court presentations
* Testify, as needed, at hearings and trials
* Must work within the framework of, and meet, time sensitive deadlines to ensure that case-related data is preserved
* Provide training on the technical aspects of forensic data to both MIS and Practice staff
* Interpret call detail records and cell tower mapping
* Provide assistance on analysis and enhancement of audio, photo, and video files

* Assist with the technical aspects of legal presentations concerning digital forensic investigations


* Experience with forensically sound evidence gathering and handling procedures that conform to legal requirements and standards
* Proficient in digital forensics, including computer and cell phone forensic software, forensic methodology/protocols, and forensic data/hardware
* Ability to research and recommend best-practice technical solutions (hardware, software, etc.) needed to meet the technical and digital forensic needs of staff
* Experience with Windows, Macintosh, Linux or UNIX, iOS, Android, and DOS preferred
* Experience with Encase Forensic Suite from Guidance, Forensic Tool Kit (FTK) from AccessData, or other forensic tools a plus
* Experience and familiarity with forensic artifacts and terms such as Disk Partition, Free Space, Unallocated Space, Slack Space, Swap File, Offset, Created/Modified/Access Date/Time, Hashing,Cache, Thumbs.db, and Metadata
* Understanding of Peer to Peer (P2P) technology and software programs such as Gnutella, BitTorrent, Limewire, and Frostwire
* Experience with mobile forensic tools such as Cellebrite and Internet Evidence Finder
