Cyber Security Systems Engineer

Position Description


Introduction:  The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Cyber Security Systems Engineer.

Job Summary: Work as a Cyber Security Systems Engineer across multiple DoN programs assuring that required security concerns are addressed.


  1. Provide input as part of Subject Matter Expert (SME) team for the development and maintenance of acquisition security documentation to include: Program Protection Plan (PPP) and Critical Program Information (CPI) studies in support of Department of the Navy (DoN) systems. (40%)
  2. Support the system engineering, design and implementation of organic and inherited cyber security controls throughout the system development lifecycle including all program acquisition phases: concept, requirements, design, development, fabrication, test, installation, operation and maintenance.(40%)
  3. Support programs in reaching and maintaining compliance with applicable cyber security statutes and regulations. (10%)
  4. Verify and validate vendor cyber security design, architectures and implementation. (10%)

Required Qualifications: BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field with 3+ years of relevant system engineering experience. Knowledge of Cybersecurity strategies and mechanisms. Excellent problem solving and analytical ability. Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to present and discuss technical information to non-technical personnel. Ability to be DoD8570 IA workforce compliant within 6 month of employment date.
Desired Qualifications: MS or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field. Experience with the Federal Body of Knowledge for information security, including Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) Policies, Directives and Instructions, NIST Interagency Reports (IRs), NIST Special Publication Series 800, and the NIST Risk Management Framework. DoD 8570 compliance with IASAE Level 2 (CISSP preferred.)
Special Working Conditions: Occasional local travel.
Security: Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for a NAC/LAC (National Agency Check/Local Agency Check) and access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
