VADODARA: Cheated in love, accused Rakesh Singh wanted to take revenge on females and took to blackmailing scores of women across the country. The ‘cyber vulture’, nabbed by the Vadodara cybercrime sleuths on Thursday, told cops that he started cheating women about eight years ago.
“Singh said that he had a girlfriend on whom he spent over Rs 1.5 lakh when they were in a relationship. But the girl walked out on him. It was then that he decided to dupe women and also earn money,” said Hardik Makadia, ACP (cybercrime).
Investigation into the cyber fraud has revealed that Singh targeted over 100 women through matrimonial websites and on various social media platforms. He even extorted lakhs from women either by blackmailing them or promising them jobs. Singh also targeted divorced women looking for a new partner.
The police said that Singh posed as a businessman, corporate professional, a senior police officer and even a judge. “He had kept WhatsApp display pic of a woman cop and would send threatening messages to his victims. Over a period of time, he developed an expertise in conning women,” Makadia told TOI.
Singh used escort service frequently and cops said he used the fraud money to stay in posh hotels and for paying his home loan too. Singh was nabbed by the cops from Bhopal on Thursday after a lady from Vadodara filed a complaint against him alleging blackmailing and extorting her of lakhs of rupees.
Singh contacted the woman through a matrimonial website and started chatting with her. After she developed trust in him, Singh got her private photos and began blackmailing her. Singh, who has 10 different email IDs, also posed as a woman online to trap women.
